Questions

US3

A 14 track alternative rap/hip-hop album (1h 1m 57s) — released September 27th 2004 on US3.COM

'Questions' is Us3's fourth album, and is released on 20th September by the new Us3.com label. 'Questions' is a contemporary slice of jazz-influenced urban sounds leaning heavily on a latino R&B vibe and has developed into a very personal album, more so, than any of Us3's previous releases, backing away from the social economic issues and dealing with personal / human concerns. Us3 is the brainchild of London-based producer Geoff Wilkinson who has experienced phenomenal success worldwide catapulted by his track 'Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)' in 1994, taken from the multi-million selling debut album 'Hand On The Torch'. Geoff has collaborated with two new vocalists which are featured on 'Questions', London-based singer Mpho, and Brooklyn native Reggi Wyns. Mpho's contributions 'Whatcha Gonna Do'' and 'When She's Dancing' both have a contemporary R&B sound with a distinct latin influence, peppered with South American percussion and the montuno piano riffs of Neil Angilley. 'Believe In Yourself' is an uplifting track featuring both Mpho and Reggi, with Us3 band member Mike Gorman on piano. Reggi asks some pertinent questions on the moody bass-led groove of 'What Does That Mean ''. DJ First Rate puts in the cuts on the turntables and guitarist Dave Okumu (of Jade Fox) lays down some angular funky chords. 'Can U Feel It '' sees Ed Jones provide the funky flute over what can only be described as a latin-influenced acid hip-hop groove (!). Mpho returns to the uplifting vibe with 'Get It Together', the Us3 horn section of saxophonist Ed Jones and trumpeter Chris Storr keep it sweet and mellow in the background. 'The Truth' continues the angular funk approach with Ed and Chris once again providing sharp horn punctuations underneath Mpho's haunting vocals. Finally, 'The Healer' is dedicated to Geoff's baby daughter Asa (which means 'the healer') this Fel Kuti-inspired track features the funky Us3 horn section of Ed and Chris, joined by the Nigerian guitarist Femi Temowo, who also plays a very George Benson-like guitar & scat solo. It is a celebration of life. All in all, 'Questions' is an eclectic mix of cultures, genres and attitudes - which is maybe the answer, not the question!
